Please follow the Action Steps. Make sure you carefully read the instructions. You can re-use the assessment for everything you work on in the future. And please know that you don't have to do every single thing we teach in there. It's an "advice buffet". ;) But it's good to think about all of it, at least once. Over time, you'll know which questions to ask yourself and what to watch out for. So view this as a checklist that makes sure you won't forget anything important. Nothing more nothing less.

Go through all the Action Steps in order. Please know that all of this applies to real drums, as well as programmed drums or added samples. If you're not using samples, think about how all of the concepts in this Action Plan apply to your real drums. After all, samples are real recordings of drums. So things like tuning, attack, sustain, ambience, drum selection, setup etc. always apply, regardless of your recording or programming approach.

This Action Plan is brought to you by Thomas Krottenthaler. Thomas is a drummer, professional drum teacher and audio engineer. He started working with Benedikt as his intern, then quickly became assistant engineer and is now editing engineer and Benedikt's co-mixing partner at Outback Recordings. He has fully edited hundreds of songs at this point, prepared and co-mixed even more sessions, recorded and/or programmed drum tracks for many different projects and was also responsible for editing and mixing the Self-Recording Band Podcast before we gave this role to someone else. In this action plan he's gonna walk you through his drum editing workflow, start to finish, leaving no stone unturned. Thomas is using Cubase, but the principles can easily be applied to any DAW. Also, the same techniques and principles can be applied to any other instrument, as well! And since drums are pretty much the most complex instrument in a standard band arrangement, it's safe to say that if you have mastered the art and science of drum editing, you'll also be able to edit most of your other tracks. To cover the specifics of guitar, bass and vocal editing, we'll create other Action Plans for you, but the majority is covered with this one. Now follow the action steps and transform your drums. Let's go! ✌️

Benedikt Hain is an engineer, producer and mixer with a special passion for rock, alternative and heavy music. Working with lots of different artists, labels and corporate clients, he has gained experience with music of all styles, while always keeping that focus on rock and alternative sub-genres like punk, metal or hardcore.
Many people struggle to get this kind of music to sound punchy and modern, while keeping the feel, raw energy and emotional impact of the performance. It often sounds either weak and amateur, or completely fake and artificial. So Benedikt has dedicated his whole career to making professional, high-end recordings and mixes that will make bands happy for the rest of their lives and deliver all the energy, emotion and power of their songs to their listeners.
