We sat down with Dan and Neil from ninnyliver to talk about the mindset and creative process that helped them finish and release their self-produced debut album after years of writing, learning and refining their craft.

Their journey was all about learning to trust their instincts, making intentional decisions that served the song, and accepting that great records are built through hundreds of small creative choices.

What You’ll Learn

In this episode we discuss:

  • Why trusting your instincts leads to better creative decisions
  • How to avoid getting stuck chasing perfection
  • Why every production decision should serve the song
  • Building a unique sound instead of copying other artists
  • How demos became an essential songwriting tool
  • Recording performances that feel authentic instead of technically perfect
  • Why preparation before recording saves countless hours later
  • How to finally finish an album you’re proud of

The Biggest Lesson: Serve the Song

One of the biggest themes throughout this conversation is that the song always comes first.

It’s easy to get distracted by plugins, drum samples, guitar tones or vocal processing. But none of those things matter if the song itself isn’t communicating what you want it to.

Dan and Neil repeatedly came back to the same principle throughout the album:

Every decision should make the song better.

Sometimes that meant simplifying an arrangement.

Sometimes it meant leaving an imperfect vocal because it captured the emotion.

Sometimes it meant completely rethinking the production after hearing a demo from a new perspective.

Instead of asking:

“Can I make this sound more impressive?”

They learned to ask:

“Does this actually make the song better?”

That shift changed everything.

Better Demos Lead to Better Songs

Another major takeaway from this episode is how powerful demos can be.

Instead of trying to explain production ideas with words, Neil learned how to create demos that communicated exactly what he was hearing.

That made collaboration much easier.

When your bandmates can hear your vision instead of trying to imagine it, conversations become clearer, arrangements improve faster, and better creative decisions follow.

For self-recording artists, demos are one of the most powerful songwriting tools you have.

Trust Your Ears

The longer you work on a song, the easier it becomes to overthink every decision.

Every breath.

Every vocal note.

Every guitar edit.

Every automation move.

The discussion around pitch correction in this episode is a great example.

Instead of fixing every tiny imperfection simply because they could, Dan and Neil learned to step back, trust their ears, and, again, ask a better question:

“Does this actually improve the song?”

Often, the answer was no.

Sometimes the imperfect performance carried more emotion than the technically perfect one.
